What is FTP Hosting?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) hosting provides the ability to upload, download, and manage files on your web server using specialised FTP client software. It is one of the oldest and most widely used methods for transferring files between your computer and your hosting account, and remains essential for web developers and site administrators.

Every hosting plan at Zhaku.com includes full FTP access, allowing you to upload website files, manage directories, set file permissions, and transfer large amounts of data efficiently. Our control panel also includes a built-in File Manager that provides drag-and-drop file management directly from your browser.

How FTP works

FTP works on a client-server model. You use an FTP client (software installed on your computer) to connect to the FTP server (your hosting account). Once connected, you can browse your server files and directories just like you would browse files on your own computer, and transfer files back and forth between the two.

The connection requires three pieces of information: the server address (usually your domain name or an IP address), a username, and a password. These credentials are provided when you set up your hosting account and can be managed through your control panel.

Types of FTP connections

Standard FTP transfers files without encryption. While fast and simple, it is not recommended for sensitive data as the credentials and file contents are transmitted in plain text.

FTPS (FTP over SSL/TLS) adds encryption to the standard FTP connection, protecting your credentials and data during transfer. This is the recommended method for most users.

SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) uses the SSH protocol for secure file transfer. It is available on our Corporate and Enterprise hosting plans and VPS servers that include SSH access.

Popular FTP clients

Several excellent FTP clients are available for free:

FileZilla is the most popular free FTP client, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It supports FTP, FTPS, and SFTP connections and has an intuitive interface.

Cyberduck is a popular choice for Mac users, with a clean interface and support for multiple protocols including FTP, SFTP, and cloud storage services.

WinSCP is a Windows-only client that excels at SFTP connections and includes a built-in text editor for quick file modifications on the server.

When to use FTP vs File Manager

FTP is ideal for uploading large numbers of files, migrating an entire website, or working with files regularly as part of your development workflow. The built-in File Manager in your control panel is better for quick edits, uploading a few files, or managing your site when you do not have FTP software available.

Both methods are included free with all Zhaku.com hosting plans. Our support team can help you configure your FTP client if needed.
